Quickest Quiz

Second screen application for the Quickest Quiz.

Every year, NPO3 starts the new TV season with a week of 3LAB. During the rest of the year, 3LAB is an online platform for fresh and experimental videos from young content creators. In this special week however, selected shows from 3LAB have their pilot episode broadcasted. Viewers can then give their own opinions, shows that do well can get selected for a timeslot in the NPO programme.

The Quickest Quiz is one of the programs that were tested in the 3LAB week and is now broadcasted by NPO3. It’s a high paced quiz that tests the knowledge of its participants, but it’s not enough to just be right, you also have to be quick. The questions are fired off in quick succession during rounds of 1 minute. The participants need to give their answers as quick as possible.

Of course the Quickest Quiz wants the viewers at home to be able to play along with the quiz. Play Now! gives the show’s editors control over design and content and the timeline is easy to manage and set up. More importantly, Play Now! has the power to deal with the fast pace of the quiz. When answering comes down to a matter of seconds, it’s crucial to have a quick second screen platform that is in sync with what the viewer is seeing on TV.

Different TV providers and signals give the broadcast different delays for every viewer. So when the timing of questions is this important, you can’t just start the second screen quiz at a set time. Instead we use audio watermarking, with this technique we are able to perfectly sync the questions on the second screen with the moment they’re being asked on TV. Our Play Now! platform responds to (for us humans) inaudible audio watermarks from the show to give every viewer the question as it’s being asked on their TV screen.
